Other forms: ground waters
Groundwater is the water that's under the surface of the earth, in the soil and in between rocks. Groundwater provides drinking water for many people around the world.
Groundwater comes from rain or melted snow and remains underground until it is withdrawn to be used for irrigation or drinking, or until it flows up into a river or stream. People living in rural areas drill wells deep into the ground hoping to tap into a source of groundwater to use in their homes. Many cities also use this underground source to provide water to large populations.
